Dong Thap Earns Over 1,200 Billion VND Annually from Labor Export

Dong Thap – Nearly 5,000 workers currently employed abroad under contract are generating foreign currency income of over 1,200 billion VND per year.

According to a report on the labor export situation from 2021-2024 by the Department of Labor, War Invalids, and Social Affairs (DoLISA) of Dong Thap Province, over the past three years, 7,150 workers have gone abroad. Of these, 6,100 worked in Japan (85.31%), 760 in South Korea (10.63%), 122 in Taiwan (1.71%), and 168 in other countries (2.35%).

From January 1, 2021, to August 31, 2024, 6,792 workers returned home after their contracts expired.

In the past three years, sectors that many workers have chosen include machinery operations, food processing, and agriculture. Additionally, there has been a significant increase in the number of workers opting for nursing and caregiving jobs abroad.

Mr. Pham Viet Cong, Director of Dong Thap's DoLISA, stated that labor export has brought substantial benefits to families, contributing to rural development. It has improved income, raised skills and qualifications for workers, and helped them apply learned experiences to local production, playing an important role in poverty reduction and economic growth.

"With nearly 5,000 workers currently abroad under contract, they have generated more than 1,200 billion VND annually in foreign currency for the province. These workers have helped build the brand and reputation of Dong Thap, expanding relations with foreign regions and creating investment opportunities for the province," Mr. Cong shared.

However, Mr. Cong also acknowledged existing challenges. A significant portion of workers going abroad has not received formal training. Upon returning home after their contracts end, many workers fail to proactively share information or report their return. Moreover, the assessment of the impact and effectiveness of the labor export program has not been sufficiently aligned with actual outcomes.

Based on these challenges, Mr. Cong recommended that labor export companies should consider providing entrepreneurship education during workers' orientation training. When workers return, local authorities should focus on providing advice, guidance, and support to help them access startup capital and develop local businesses.

On the afternoon of October 11, 2024, Dong Thap’s People’s Committee hosted a workshop titled "Managing Workers Returning from Abroad and Solutions to Attract Returning Workers to Start and Develop Businesses." The workshop is expected to propose additional solutions for managing and maximizing the potential of the labor export program.
