Japan Expands Employment Opportunities for Skilled Vietnamese Workers in Nine Additional Sectors

According to the Department of Overseas Labor Management (Ministry of Labor, Invalids, and Social Affairs), Japan has announced plans to expand its foreign worker program under the "Specified Skills" visa category. Notably, skilled workers will also be able to sponsor family members to live with them in Japan.

Under the expanded list, nine additional sectors will be open to skilled workers under the Specified Skills (Type 2) visa. These include industries such as agriculture, machinery manufacturing, shipbuilding, building cleaning, food services, restaurants, hotels, and more. This expansion is part of Japan's strategy to address its labor shortage amid an aging population.

Previously, workers under this program could only work long-term in two sectors: construction and shipbuilding. With the expansion, workers in agriculture, manufacturing, and services will now also have the opportunity to stay long-term in Japan.

In reality, the new program is still awaiting approval from the Japanese government, with decisions expected to be made in the autumn (September or October) of this year.

Leaders of the Department of Overseas Labor Management have stated that the new program, once implemented, will provide Vietnamese workers with more long-term employment opportunities in Japan. Workers under the Specified Skills (Type 2) program will have higher skill levels, higher wages, and better social welfare benefits. They will also have more job options. Once recognized as skilled workers, foreign laborers will be entitled to salaries and benefits equivalent to those of Japanese nationals.

Another significant benefit for these workers is the ability to transfer between companies during their employment. Moreover, they will be permitted to sponsor family members to join them in Japan and will also have the opportunity to apply for permanent residency.

Summary:
The Japanese government has expanded its labor import program, allowing Vietnam Manpower to participate in nine additional sectors, including agriculture, machinery manufacturing, and services. The expansion, aimed at addressing Japan's labor shortage, provides skilled Vietnamese workers with better employment prospects, higher wages, and long-term residency options. Workers will also be able to sponsor their families and apply for permanent residency once established in Japan.
